The Red Thistle Dancers entertained a crowd at Senior Coastsiders on Saturday. The troupe is dedicated to sharing the dances and music of the Scotland with people throughout the Bay Area.

Since 1973, husband and wife John and Jennifer Kelly have been part of San Francisco’s iconic Red Thistle Dancers – both as dancers, and as president and artistic director respectively. The group is renowned for both its Scottish country dancing and its Highland dancing.

We open Season 11 of Friday Nights at the de Young with a celebration of the special exhibition Botticelli to Braque: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland and the annual Bouquets to Artexhibition.

Opening night will feature a special lecture by Esther Bell, Curator-in-Charge of European Painting, bagpippers, performances by Red Thistle Dancers, art making, and open studio hours for April's Artist-in-Residence, Jon Bernson.

The Red Thistle Dancers perform the dance "Petronella" as an illustration in several places to passages from the text such as this memorable exchange between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett at the Netherfield Ball:  "Do not you feel a great inclination, Miss Bennet, to seize such an opportunity of dancing a reel?"

The public event included live music and traditional Scottish country and highland dancing in Victorian-era costumes.

The Red Thistle Dancers, a Palo Alto Scottish dance performance group, is having its weekly rehearsal in preparation for a summer of Scottish Highland games.
